42 United States Code sec. 1983 protects people against illegal acts by government officials. It protects against illegal deprivations of property, unlawful discrimination, and illegal deprivations of liberty. Plus, if the plaintiff wins, the government has to pay the attorney fees for the victim.
These cases are very complicated and time-consuming. They can also cost a lot in legal expenses because there are many defenses that the government is allowed to raise. Although we usually have to charge you for fees and expenses to bring a civil rights suit, if you win, you will be reimbursed for those fees by the government.
